I joined the navy as a CTT. How fast will I be able to advance from E1 to E3?

What is the average time it takes for the average person? I know that in boot camp I am an E1. When is the progression?

The required time in rate from E1 to E2 is 9 months and from E2 to E3 is another 9 months.

See http://usmilitary.about.com/od/navy/l/blpromchart.htm for more information on promotion requirements.

I’m in the Army, but I’ve worked with the Navy. I haven’t seen a sailor out of training that wasn’t at least an E3.

Get your DEP requirements done! It will boost you to at least E-2… and I know that for being in the Advanced Technical Field, you will probably get E-2 out of boot camp. Just make sure to ask your recruiters. Also, if you have some college, you could go in as an E-3. There’s also a referral program to get bumped up.

In other words, don’t just accept that you have to be an E-1 right off the bat. For the Navy, there are too many other options to go in higher. Talk to your recruiters, and even better, if you know anyone in the Navy currently. They’ll probably be a little bit more honest. Good luck!

At school for CTI, nearly 2 years in the Navy. Went in as an E-2 due to referrals.
