how is going to army basic training as and E3 different from an E1?

so i leave in less the 2 weeks to fort jackson, and i enlisted over a year ago and have been to my unit every month for drill since i enlisted so i know the pay is one difference between an E1 and a E3. i did 4 years of afjrotc to receive my rank. but is pay the only difference in basic. because my command sgt major had mentioned more rank more responsibility, so what exactly will i be doing different in basic from an E1?

You won’t be doing anything different. The pay IS the only difference.

And here’s what they didn’t tell you E-4 comes at 26 months ( unless you get a waiver) regardless of what rank you entered at so ALL those E-1’s will make E-4 the same time as you.

everyone is the same in basic.

you won’t get more duties or priveleges because of your higher rank.

They might make you a squad or team leader, this is only a temporary assignment and you can get fired on the spot. But as far as the drill sergeant is concerned, you are all privates and don’t know anything. If you show leadership potential based on your actions you might be given more responsibility on a consistent basis.

You are squad leader material. Can’t think of anything else other than pay. The ROTC background can work against you if you screw up cuz "PRIVATE I KNOW YOU KNOW BETTER THAN TO HAVE DONE THAT!!!!!" or "SO THAT’S HOW THE AIR FARCE (farce not force) TEACHES YOU? HOLY CRAP ARE WE IN TROUBLE!!!"

Ya gitten the point?

It depends, i went in as an E3 but they didn’t have us wear that rank during basic. The Drills will definitely LOOK at you as a potential squad leader but they won’t necessarily make you one, they will make a determination on a few days observation, as to whether they think you are right for that role. Don’t worry about it at all, people react differently to the situation, of being suddenly in that environment, and sometimes "leadership" qualities are not recognized so instantly as the Drills will have to decide. There are "informal leaders" who will emerge as well, but don’t get caught up in this stuff, you just want to survive basic however you can…it will never matter one single bit at all.

I promise you, your Drill Sargent will hate all of you equally. The extra rank won’t get you any love.

Basic training can vary from location to location for instance… Basic training will be harder at Fort benning (Home of the Infantry) than Fort jackson

Everyone is nothing but fecal matter. Yes, the only difference is pay.

When I went through Basic Training we had a few E-3 / PFC in our Company. They were put into squad leader positions and were also responsible for getting each Platoon that they were in, lined up and in position for each formation, during our training.

They were a great help to the Drill Sergeants, but if someone in the Platoon screwed up, the E-3′ caught Hell for not keeping their soldiers in line.

The E-3’s kind of went power crazy with their extra rank over all us E-1s and were disliked to a certain degree.

When I went through Basic in 1981 (Artillery) we had open bay barreacks, but the E-3 soldiers shared some small rooms in the barracks, away from us little E-1’s. LOL
